Nursery Manager

ArborGen is a multi-national business and market leader for plant production for the forest sector, with a number of nursery sites throughout New Zealand. The company also has a large tree breeding (R & D) programme.

We seek a motivated and experienced Nursery Manager to manage the day-to-day operations at Edendale, ArborGen’s bare root and container nursery near Invercargill. Edendale is a large nursery and produces and sells several million trees annually to the forestry sector in Southland, Otago and as far as Waimakariri/Canterbury. They also have a retail operation selling a range of plant species to farmers and landowners for riparian planting, stock feed and shelter.

As the Nursery Manager, you will have an excellent knowledge of large-scale plant production, as well as proven site and people management experience. Key responsibilities will include plant propagation and management of the bare root and containerised tree stocks, meeting annual sales targets, customer contracts and future production plans, recording, reporting and analysing data and managing key relationships within the business. Having a relevant tertiary qualification or a practical background in the horticultural sector will be favourable to your success.

As this is an interfacing role, you will be responsible for leading and working alongside a team of staff and confidently interacting with a range of stakeholders on a regular basis. You will need to relate well to people at all levels, have a positive attitude and display effective verbal and written communication skills. Having an understanding of the obligations and legal requirements around human resources and health and safety will be essential to carry out these functionalities, as will your planning and organisation skills. There will also be a technological component, requiring computer literacy and aptitude to learn ArborGen’s systems.
