Smedley Station is undoubtedly one of the most reputable on-farm training institutions in the country; it exudes tradition and has a brand of excellence that resonates through the people it graduates. Smedley is administered by the Public Trust and governed by the Howard Estate Advisory Board after it was left to the Crown as an endowment to be carried forward as a farm undertaking to train young people in practical farming.
The Station is situated in Central Hawke’s Bay, 40km west of Waipukurau near the Wakarara and Ruahine Ranges. It comprises 5054ha (3186ha effective) across 3 blocks wintering 28,000su. A diverse enterprise mix endorses the Trust’s philosophy of exposing Cadets to a wide range of learnings. Due to career progression the Block Manager role at Ridgelands has now become available. This 540ha block encompasses part of the finishing aspect of the farming business with lambs, bulls and velvet stags.
Key to your success in this role will be your excellent stockmanship skills, a team of 4-5 working dogs and a strong understanding of pasture management and rotational grazing. This opportunity should be viewed as an outstanding platform where you can springboard your career, share your learnings and create your own personal brand.
